In case you were hiding out under a rock yesterday, the internet shattered when Taylor Swift revealed the album name and cover art for her 6th studio album, but seeing that nothing she does is coincidental, fans have dug up numerous theories as to the secret messages hidden on her album cover. So let’s channel our inner Detective Olivia Benson and get to digging.
First things first, if you know anything about Taylor, it’s that her favorite number is 13. That said, many fans are diving deeper into the album’s release date – seeing that she’s dropping her album on 11/10/2017 if you separate each of those numbers and add them all together, you’ll get 13. Oh, but it doesn’t stop there.
What may be the most farfetched bit of arithmetic yet, comes when you calculate the number of days between 1989’s release and Reputation’s. 1989 was released on October 27, 2014 and Reputation will be released on November 10, 2017. The number in between those days is 1,110 AKA 11/10 AKA November 10th. MIND. BLOWN.
The next bit of evidence comes as many fans were quick to notice the all-too-familiar font choice of ‘Reputation.’ It’s no question Taylor may be throwing some shade toward the Kanye/Kim debacle that occurred last year, but many think she is throwing a hint of subtle shade at the font of Kanye’s Saint Pablo tour merch. One Twitter user posted the two photos side by side, and the resemblance is quiet uncanny. However, some were quick to come to Tay’s defense in creating their own theory that the font is actually that of the New York Times, in which she’s alluding to the mantra of “fake news” in the press. Could be a stretch, but I’d be lying if I said these theories aren’t the least bit fascinating.
Next comes Taylor’s attire, preferably her chain choker necklace. Oh yeah, we’re going there. Many found the chain and its tightness around her neck to be a visual representation of her constantly being “strangled by the hate.” One fan wrote on Tumblr QUOTE, “THIS. It’s a tight choker. Like how she was being strangled by not speaking out to all the hate and the headlines. How she’s been restrained for years. AND NOW SHE’S GOING TO BE FREE.” Aside from Tay’s choker, let’s move further down to her torn sweater. Another Tumblr user pointed out QUOTE, “how a bit of her shirt is ripped because she’s been literally torn apart by the entire world but she put on her brave face and continues to fight the fight like the fearless kind of woman she is.”
But while we’re on the subject of Tay’s sweater, many also used the cover in its entirety as a dig toward Kimye. Then came the allegations that Tay’s sweater looks like a Yeezy sweater, and that the wet hair is symbolic of Kim’s iconic effortless wet-hair look. Could also be just a coincidence, or yet another way to get the people talking, but going back to the album’s artwork, the fifth and final theory comes as fans have pointed out that Taylor hasn’t fully faced forward in an album since her very first self-titled album back in 2006.
Some are taking this as a sign of defiance, as in she’s done hiding from the public, and some are running with the fact that half of her face is covered by newspaper print, in which we will only ever know half of the truth. So there you have it – if that doesn’t freak you out as to how strategic Taylor Swift is, then perhaps just wait until her album release on November 10th.
But right now, I gotta know which theory you think to be most accurate, and if you have any of your own, share all your thoughts down here in the comments. After that, click right over here to see which emoji Kim Kardashian banned from her Instagram following Taylor’s album details, and I’m sure you could probably already guess… thanks for hanging out with me here on Clevver News, I’m your host Zoe Lillian and I’ll see you next time.
