And just like that, the 2017 Emmys are a go — but not before Stephen Colbert kicked off the beginning of the show with a little song, dance, and a bunch of jokes about Donald Trump.
However, before we go into some of the jabs Stephen made about the commander in chief in his opening, can we just talk about the incredible musical number before the monologue? I mean, the production was amazing, the cameos made by Millie Bobby Brown, Archer, and the cast of This Is Us were amazing, even the song itself was catchy!
The Emmys are all about celebrating the talented people behind some of our favorite TV shows, but there were still some mentions of standing up for what’s right and helping out those in need during the opening.
During Chance the Rapper’s cameo where he rapped about some of the greatest shows on TV, he still managed to drop a line or two to remind people to support their local mom and pop stores and to show up to the protest instead of wasting time in front of the TV.
Meanwhile, after the musical number, Stephen made it a point to thank the first responders and those who went out of their way to help others during both Hurricanes Harvey and Irma. He also pointed those who still want to donate to the relief fund in the right direction.
And after all the niceness and harmless jokes towards his fellow TV peers, Stephen said hello to the president on TV because well, let’s face it, how could Trump NOT watch the Emmys?
Who didn’t see that joke coming, am I right? Guess we’ll just have to wait and see if Trump actually responds to Stephen’s tweet joke.
