This past weekend, many showed their support for the NFL players peacefully exercising their right to protest during the national anthem and Stevie Wonder was one of them. Right before his set at the Global Citizens Festival, Stevie took a knee to support the cause and told the crowd QUOTE, “It is only through life that we can make life happen, for ourselves and for each other.”

On top of making headlines for his act of solidarity, Stevie also performed ‘Happy’ to close out the festival with Pharrell Williams. Following their joint performance, Pharrell was heard saying “I can’t believe what just happened.” Well believe it, Pharrell because it really happened.

While both Stevie and Pharrell left the crowd feeling happy as the festival ended, it’s safe to say Green Day got everyone up all riled during their set and performance of “American Idiot” when they changed one of their lyrics to this.

Aside from the political tone of the festival, Demi Lovato was named a Global Citizens ambassador for mental health. Both Demi and Global Citizen have chosen to support the Save the Children program, which champions the mental health of thousands of children displaced within Iraq and other vulnerable communities.
Demi called for action on stage during the festival by saying QUOTE, “Ending the stigma around mental health conditions and supporting internally displaced children to build physical and mental resilience through education and access to justice is not a choice, it needs to happen, and it needs to happen now.”

While many performers during the show called for political and social changes around the world, The Lumineers took time out during their set to remind people of the destruction both Hurricane Irma and Hurricane Maria left in the Caribbean and advocated for greater hurricane relief aid across the islands.
