As long as he’s being his genuine self, we’re happy!
Sam Smith has always been very open with his fans in not just his lyrics, but his personal life too.
And now he’s diving in deeper about his past and present with gender expression.
Back in 2014 he opened up in a Fader interview about his sexuality saying QUOTE, “In the Lonely Hour is about a guy that I fell in love with last year, and he didn’t love me back….I just wanted to talk about him and have it out there. It’s about a guy and that’s what I wanted people to know—I want to be clear that that’s what it’s about.”
And since then he’s been very open about being gay and celebrating that fact.
Now he’s opening up about something different–his gender expression and identity.
In an interview with Sunday Times he talked about how his gender expression has evolved from his youth and how when he was 17 he didn’t own a piece of male clothing. He said QUOTE, “I would wear full make-up every day in school, eyelashes, leggings with Dr Martens and huge fur coats, for 2.5 years.”
And when asked if he felt like a cisgender man he referenced the Venus tattoos on his hands which are symbols for female biology and said QUOTE, “No. I mean, I’ve got these tattoos on my fingers. I don’t know what the title would be, but I feel just as much woman as I am man.”
Gender expression and identity can sound super complicated, but really it’s just however you feel and however you want to present yourself in a way that feels the most genuine for you. Whether it’s a man who just wants to dress in traditionally women’s clothes, or it’s someone that doesn’t really feel like either gender and wants to express that in whatever style suits them.
And Sam is not the first celeb to talk openly about gender fluidity.
The Foster’s actor Tom Phelan identifies as non-binary which means neither male or female.
And Miley Cyrus also revealed this year that she thinks of herself as gender-neutral. She said QUOTE, “It’s weird that I’m a girl, because I just don’t feel like a girl, and I don’t feel like a boy.
“I just feel like nothing.’”
So as of right now Sam Smith isn’t labelling his sense of gender identity, and that’s totally okay! Leave your thoughts on all this in the comments and don’t forget to subscribe. Thanks for watching Newsfeed, I’m your host Ava Gordy and we’ll see you guys next time.
