Tim Walz accepted the vice-presidential nomination for the Democrats, Oprah made a surprise appearance, and Donald Trump hit back at the Obamas.
The third day of the Democrat National Convention featured an emotional rallying call from Tim Walz as he accepted the party’s vice-presidential nomination.
The Minnesota governor, who was little known in America 15 days ago, acknowledged he had never given such a big speech but said that as a former high school football coach, “I have given a lot of pep talks.”
He said America should be a place where children don’t go hungry, healthcare and housing are human rights, “and the government stays the hell out of your bedroom,” referring to Republican assaults on abortion rights and same-sex marriage.
Elsewhere, Oprah Winfrey made a surprise appearance at the convention and Donald Trump responded to “personal attacks” made the the Obamas 24 hours previously.

Walz gives ‘pep talk’ of a lifetime
Tim Walz declared Republicans should “mind their own damn business” on reproductive rights as he accepted the party’s vice presidential nomination at the Democratic National Convention.
The Minnesota governor, who rose from relative obscurity to become Kamala Harris’s running mate after Joe Biden stepped down last month, gave the biggest speech of his career as Wednesday night’s headliner at the DNC in Chicago.
His 15-minute speech focused heavily on reproductive rights, education and the family unit – issues that poll well for the Democrats with moderate and swing voters.
Oprah takes swipe at Vance’s ‘childless cat lady’
Oprah Winfrey spoke at a Democratic convention for the first time on Wednesday night, giving an enthusiastic endorsement to Kamala Harris while encouraging independents and undecided voters to turn out for the Democrats.
In a forceful, vigorous speech that ranged from school integration to childless cat ladies, Winfrey sought to encourage voters to cast their ballot for “the best of America”.
Winfrey said she was a registered independent and called on other independents and undecideds to vote.
Clinton slams Trump as selfish, vengeful and old
Bill Clinton tore into Donald Trump while touting Kamala Harris’s leadership on Wednesday… in a speech seeking to help shepherd his party into a new era.
Clinton leaned heavily into the role of elder statesman in his remarks while describing Trump as self-centered and positioning Harris… as the natural opposite.
He began by referencing his age — notable by the slightly raspy voice and shake in the hands — while still getting in a dig at Trump. “Two days ago I turned 78 — the oldest man in my family,” Clinton remarked. “And the only personal vanity I want to assert, is that I’m still younger than Donald Trump.”
Trump appears behind bulletproof glass
Donald Trump took the stage in Asheboro, North Carolina, for his first outdoor event since he was injured in a shooting at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, last month.
In the wake of the shooting, which left Trump with a bloodied ear, injured two rallygoers and killed one man, the Secret Service issued a temporary recommendation that the former president hold indoor rallies only. Then, last week, the Secret Service said it would use bulletproof glass to protect him at outdoor rallies.
Trump launched into his speech focused on national security, featuring a series of well-established Maga talking points on Nato, Afghanistan and Russia, and attacks on his Democratic opponent, Kamala Harris.
Trump hits back at Obamas
Former President Trump on Wednesday mocked allies who suggested he should not engage in personal attacks, pointing to fiery speeches a night earlier from former President Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama at the Democratic convention.
“Did you see Barack Hussein Obama last night? He was taking shots at your president. And so was Michelle,” Trump told supporters at a North Carolina rally.
“You know, they always say, ‘Sir, please stick to policy, don’t get personal,’” Trump continued. “And yet they’re getting personal all night long, these people. Do I still have to stick to policy?”
