The Cannes Film Festival is banning nudity from the red carpet for “decency reasons” amid a growing trend of celebrities opting for sheer outfits.

Under this year’s dress code, it states: “For decency reasons, nudity is prohibited on the Red Carpet, as well as in any other area of the Festival.”

It is the first time such rules have been added to the dress requirements.

Violation of the rules may result in guests being denied entry to the event, with the festival-goers’ charter adding: “The festival welcoming teams will be obligated to prohibit red carpet access to anyone not respecting these rules.”

Festival organisers say the move was made following red carpet appearances where celebrities wore a so-called ‘naked dress’, made up of sheer material with their bodies visible underneath.

This year’s event begins on Tuesday and will showcase the highest-profile films, with a plethora of A-listers in attendance.

Most recently, Halle Berry caused a storm at the Met Gala in New York when she showed up wearing a sequinned black panel dress with sheer fabric.

People were quick to give their opinions on social media, branding the outfit “tasteless” and “obviously trying to be outrageous”.

Other well-known outfit choices include Bella Hadid’s brown sheer dress, which exposed her bare chest, and Kendall Jenner’s iconic see-through green sequinned ensemble.

As well as banning nudity, Cannes is also prohibiting “voluminous dresses” with large trains for traffic flow reasons.

It’s understood that the iconic venue, Palais des Festivals et des Congrès, has adopted a more conservative dress code, with suits, dinner jackets, and floor-length evening gowns generally favoured.

However, the festival-goers’ charter said a “little black dress” would be permitted, also suggesting a “cocktail dress, a dark-coloured pant suit, a dressy top with black pants; elegant shoes and sandals with or without a heel” would be allowed.
